SMARTâ„¢ FUT (FOLLICULAR UNIT TRANSPLANT)

Topic 1 : What Causes Hair Loss?
For both men and women, androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium (TE) are the most common causes of hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness, is caused by genetics. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone found in men that is involved in this type of hair loss and shortens the lifespan of each hair follicle. As men age, they produce more DHT, causing hair loss or thinning.
The other cause of hair loss, telogen effluvium (TE), occurs when more hair than usual is in the dying or shedding phase of the hair cycle. While this type of hair loss is typically more temporary, it can be brought on by reasons including pregnancy, severe illness, extreme stress, thyroid disorders, certain medications, and diet and hormonal changes.
Topic 2 : What is SMART™ FUT?
SMART™ Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a surgical procedure where hair is transplanted from the permanent zone, the area in the back and sides of the scalp where hair is more resistant to balding, to the bald or balding areas of the scalp. This is accomplished using naturally-occurring groups of 1, 2, 3, or 4 hairs, called follicular units.
After the patient’s scalp is anesthetized (local anaesthesia), the doctor removes a strip of tissue from the donor area, an area within the permanent zone, and, once extracted, the donor strip is cut into many individual follicular units using microscopic dissection techniques. As these follicular unit grafts are being prepared, the doctor makes tiny holes in the scalp, called recipient sites, where the grafts are placed.
In Glojas, we ensure the arrangement and positioning of these follicular unit grafts determine the aesthetic qualities of a hair transplant. Therefore, this arrangement must be decided on a case-by-case basis, depending on the patients’ history of hair loss and the likelihood of future hair loss. Since follicular unit transplants resembles the way hair grows in nature, the results, in expert hands, will look completely natural.
Recovery of SMART™ FUT.
Relatively, the SMART™ FUT procedure at Glojas is a minimal invasive procedure that recovers in within two weeks with bearable pain from the donor and recipient area.
At the recipient site, there will be formation of scabs which will be removed within the first week’s hair wash protocol. As for the donor site, sutures will be removed and a fine linear scar will be formed and the existing hair surrounding the donor area will cover the scar.
Just like our SMART™ FUE good hygiene and avoiding physical activities like going to the gym should help to fasten the recovery and to avoid infections on scalp.
